WHO NEEDS PAPER?

Within only a few months of the debut of its Page 1 podcasts, the Globe has, yet again, added more options for its on-the-go readers.

Boston.com patrons can now listen to Sam Allis while exercising, the author of the Globe Magazine's coupling column while riding the T, or the Etiquette at Work column while at work.

I'm not sure how the people who actually download and listen to the podcasts feel about this, but this new way of getting Globe content without actually getting the Globe seems to be part of a sad trend of moving the entire content of the paper to boston.com.

Why would people who buy the Sunday Globe just to read the coupling column, or The Observer now bother to pay the $2.50? Readers can even see the top stories in tomorrow's paper the night before it actually comes out (see previous post). The reasons for purchasing the physical product are becoming few and far between.

The Globe is by no means the first paper to make certain columns available through podcast. Its parent company, the New York Times also has a laundry list of columns and articles it makes available through mp3 files.

How soon before mp3 users can download different sections of the paper, or even the whole paper? How soon before newspaper readers become newspaper listeners?

Stay tuned.

Personally, I'm looking forward to being able to listen to Matt Brelis on my iPod every afternoon.
