THE NEW VIEW MEDIA

Expanding on its user-generated content, Boston.com started this month to solicit and post videos of high-school football games.

It's not pets in silly costumes, but this addition to Boston.com will certainly drive up its number of visitors.

Videos are nothing new to the Internet, but have been made wildly popular since Youtube's debut. For about a year, Boston.com has partnered with New England Cable News and New England Sports Network as the site's video component. With that partnership, the site set a record last month with more than 2 million videos seen by its readers.

The New York Times Company, owner of the Boston Globe and Boston.com, has been desperately trying to launch a successful video or television component for years. Will the web finally provide a solution to the problem? Are home movies of little Billy's high-school football games just the beginning?

Stay tuned.
