NEW KIDS ON THE BLOG

The nation's oldest school system is now fully immersed in the 21st century.

The more than 57,000 school children in Boston have one more addition to their reading list - the Boston Public School Department's blog.

Since October officials at BPS, mainly Chris Horan, the chief communications officer, have posted various items coming out of the 145 schools in the district.

As the blog's "about" section says: "This blog provides news, events, and other information about the Boston Public Schools, the nation's first public school system, founded in 1647."

At least to this wannabee journalist, the blog reads very much like a stack of press releases abandoned on a newsroom fax machine. While it proves to serve its actual purpose of touting the students of BPS, it fails to follow its mission to "provide news." I can't help but wonder if the next round of MCAS score are not up to par in the district, will those results be posted on the blog?

Will this blog ever move to the head of the class and start reporting real news?
